The Mysterious I. D. Vide in Newton’s Nemesis is a great classroom resource that can generate mathematical thinking from 4th to 7th grades.  Aligned with the current curriculum and written by a professor of mathematics education, teachers use the series to talk about the different meanings of fractions, multiplication and division. Extension activities include exploring the life of Benjamin Banneker and decoding the coordinate plane.

In the third comic book in the series, our heroes explore what it means to divide a whole number by a fraction, discover the common denominator method, and struggle to identify the referent unit of a fraction.  Is a slice of pizza 1/8th of a pizza, or one-third of a serving?
